The 109th have delayed their arrival to EGRIP at least until Sunday, and this means that our traverse crew, now at GRIP, probably cannot be picked up at Summit before Monday. So, at EGRIP, we decided to continue our preparations for packing camp. Mario and Thomas also completed the first of two repairs of broken struts in the dome. There was also time to do a little house cleaning in the dome. Frederik served us a dish with homemade pasta. Each morning, we wake up to freshly baked rolls.
The traverse has borrowed a generator at Summit, and this allowed them to drive the whole train to GRIP, where they are camping the next two days. They want to find the casing of the GRIP borehole, and they will pack down equipment that should stay at GRIP. So today, they built a cargo line at GRIP, and they made a rather large excavation with the Pistenbully. At the same time, they run a near-surface radar to map out the former GRIP camp some 15 m below the surface. GRIP was last active in 1994.
What EGRIP did today:
- Made first of two repairs on the dome.
- Removing snow around carpenter’s garage.
- House cleaning in the dome.
Weather today: Mostly overcast, with few periods of sunshine. Temp. −19°C to −15°C, 6 – 14 kt from W, visibility unrestricted.
What traverse did today:
- Traverse train moved to GRIP.
- Unloading equipment at GRIP
- Packing down large radar.
- Making large excavation to find the GRIP borehole casing.
