June 7 − 8: Traverse at GRIP site and they found the borehole intact!

Some really good news: Saturday, the traverse crew reported that they found the GRIP borehole casing at 4.5 m depth. They lowered a borehole camera and found that the casing is intact. This is really good news for the project Green2Ice, as we now can proceed with confidence to move all of EGRIP camp to GRIP site. The casing will serve as reference point for setting up the new GRIP camp. Through careful radar profiling, the crew identified the old GRIP drill dome and could even see a reflection from the casing. During excavation, they repeated the radar profile to carefully approach the top of the casing. And they found it, without damaging the casing and the lid. This is a very good achievement.

At EGRIP, we prepared to take down garages; but right now, we are expecting the 109th to arrive with personnel and equipment on Monday. They will use our garages for some days, so we’ll have to wait before taking them down. Also, once the science traverse team are picked up at Summit, a crew of three will drive the now almost empty traverse train back to EGRIP to assist in moving the whole camp South. At EGRIP, we had a Saturday night dinner prepard by Paul, Mario and Thomas.

What EGRIP did in the weekend:

  1. Working on second of two repairs on the dome.
  2. Removing snow around mechanics’s garage.
  3. Saturday evening.
