April 28 – May 3: The FOM office in Kangerlussuaq is open!

Tuesday April 28th, the FOMs Marie Kirk and Jørgen Peder Steffensen arrived with Air Greenland from Copenhagen. They have spent the last five days opening the office in KISS, getting the cars up and running, picking up cargo from Copenhagen, and unpacking cargo sent up in containers in 2025 from Denmark and Canada. On Tuesday May 5, the put-in team will arrive and prepare for the first flight of the season which is planned for Thursday May 7. This year, the put-in team will be flying to Summit station and travel by snowmobiles to GRIP. The first planned flight to GRIP will happen after the put-in team has prepared the skiway for the LC-130 ski equipped Hercules. This flight will bring in people to complete the GRIP team for May and early June, and together with two consecutive flights, GRIP camp will receive all equipment and fuel needed for the first half of the season.

What the FOMs have done Tuesday to Sunday:

  1. Opening the FOM office in KISS.
  2. Starting all vehicles.
  3. Picking up food and cargo from Blue Water and Air Greenland.
  4. Opening 2 x 20’ containers and staging cargo in warehouse 442.
  5. Activating the internet to FOM office.
  6. Attending first planning meeting with 109th.
  7. Working on load plans for the May flights to Summit/GRIP.

Ad. 2: Batteries of front two forklifts were not disconnected and therefore discharged. Both vehicles needed charging over night to start and move them.

Ad. 3: The ground in the yard in front of warehouse 442 was dry, hard and free of snow. This provided good conditions for sorting and staging cargo with both forklifts.

Ad. 5: After some frustrating days of getting the Tusass service technician to come to the FOM office, he arrived Friday and the FOM office now has telephone and internet.

Weather this week: Wednesday to Friday, sunny, weak winds, dry ground with no snow. 0 C down to -10 C. Saturday and Sunday, overcast and snow, weak winds, 0 C to -10 C.
