May 12 “Getting GRIP ready for Skier operations”

There is now only 2 days until we expect the first Skier (i.e. an NYANG LC-130) to land here at GRIP. Therefore, after yesterday’s storm we are all busy using today’s nice weather for readying GRIP for aircraft operations. JP has been in one Pistenbully grooming skiway, apron and taxiways a second time, while Sverrir was in another Pistenbully readying the cargo staging area and load pad. Meanwhile, Carlos and Jonathan have been busy raising skiway markers and even replacing a few markers that were worn out. Bo has been testing radios in the cupola, by calling up Jonathan and Carlos on the skiway, while Anders has been moving food from the heavy sledge to the white tent with some assistance from Bo. Thomas has been busy readying and Pistenbullies, clearing snow for easy access to the white tent and moving fuelling systems and sledges out. Sepp has been documenting the operations, with a special focus on JP getting footage for a documentary. In between moving food boxes, Anders also managed to make nice food for us all, which we now can enjoy with a glass of soda due to Sverrir repairing the soda machine in the evening!

What we did Tuesday:

  1. Groomed skiway, taxiways and apron
  2. Groomed cargo staging area and made load pad
  3. Raised and replaced broken skiway markers on southern half of skiway
  4. Readied and tested airband radios and marine band radios.
  5. Repaired soda machine in the dome.
  6. Cleared snow in front of white storage tent, and moved sledges and fueling systems out.
  7. Moved all “can be frozen” food from cargo sledge to white tent for temporary storage.

Weather today: Temp from to -29C to -20C, sunny until evening where a cloud cover moved in. Some intermittent thin ground fog. Wind 3-10kts, turning from SSE to SW and then to W.
