May 18: “Continuing to build up camp”

We still wait for another plane with cargo and frozen food here at GRIP, but today was not a day in the air for the Skiers, as maintenance was needed on these precious aircrafts in Kangerlussuaq. Hence, we proceeded with the many tasks still at hand to get the GRIP camp fully operational. Specifically, the berm for the drill tent was finished by Thomas, before he went out on a late evening skiway grooming mission in anticipation of a Skier mission tomorrow.

We also had teams finishing the construction og the 4th Weatherport and excavating boxes and drums on the cargo line. Furthermore, James started excavating the storage trench using a snow blower. Drift snow was also cleared out of the storage garage, and camp safety equipment was inspected and replaced where needed. Finally, the construction of the drillers workshop was also started, so all in all another busy day here at GRIP. Anders, as usual kept us all well fed, making the most of the somewhat limited selection of food items we have in camp, while we wait for the next resupply.

What we did this Monday:

  1. Groomed the skiway.
  2. Constructed the 4th weatherport.
  3. Excavated boxes and drums on the cargo line.
  4. Finished building berm for drill tent.
  5. Started excavating storage trench
  6. Cleared snow out from carpenter’s garage.
  7. Starting construction of ice core drillers workshop on heavy sledge.
  8. Inspected camp safety equipment.

Weather: Starting with drifting snow and a magnificent halo early in the morning, turning Sunny during the day with some lower clouds forming around noon, and then completely clear skies in the afternoon. Temp from to -21C to -17C. Wind decreasing from 14kts until lunch to completely calm in the evening, mainly from SW.
