May 27: “A windy and cold period”

Yesterday wind picked up, and completely as forecast we had another windy day today – indeed if the forecast is correct winds will only relent when we approach the weekend. While the wind has put a halt to out solar panel project, the wind strength is luckily still sufficiently moderate that other activities can proceed all be it at a bit slower pace due to drifting snow. Hence, the cable tunnel balloon was covered with snow blown snow today, and Sepp managed to finish up the new cook’s freezer. Hence, after lunch, Anders, Carlos, Charlotte, Jonathan and Sepp were able to move all the frozen and dry food from the white garage tent to the cook’s freezer. Later on Carlos and Jonathan dug out the interior foundation of the white tent. Hence, when the winds relent, this white tent can be used by the drillers to extent the new drill tent.
Today, Tom changed the insulation around exterior water tubes, to make them more resilient to freezing up during shorter periods without generator power. This was done after both of our water systems froze up late last evening during an unscheduled power out of barely 15 minutes, due to the cold and windy conditions we have had! In the dome, Bo assembled our new OneWeb/Tusass satellite internet antenna, and with the help of Jonathan and Tom, got it installed outside the Dome, next to our ceilometer. And in the drill tent Kevin, Julien, Rahul and Charlotte excavated the casing tube down to a depth of 2.5m. Afterwards the upper most to casing sections were dismounted.
Also, today food was great here at GRIP, with Charlotte making a nice chocolate cake, and Anders preparing fish and chips for us all for dinner!

What we did this Wednesday:
1. Groomed and leveled in and around camp.
2. Improved insulation around exterior water tubes.
3. Dug down 2.5m of the inclined trench and removed two uppermost casing sections.
4. Covered balloon-trench for cable tunnel from new well to drill tent with snow.
5. Finished up cook’s freezer.
6. Moved all frozen and dry food from white tent to cook’s freezer.
7. Set up OneWeb/Tusass antenna next to ceilometer.
8. Dug out interior of white garage tent.

Weather: Clear conditions with some snow drift forming during periods of higher wind. Temp from -35C to -26C. Wind between 10 kts and 20kts turning from NNW to N during the day.
