Today, the wind slowly started to decrease in strength as the day progressed, and the drifting thus stopped around noon. Hence, outside work got somewhat easier, even though the wind was still too high for mounting of solar panels on the dome. Hence, Charlotte and Rahul continued to help with getting more camp infrastructure in place before our camp will have a much larger population later in the season. Among other tasks, they got the weather ports equipped with mattresses and polar bear safety bags, and re-assembled and tested two of the remote-controlled sirens, that are part of our distributed camp warning system. Hopefully winds will come sufficiently down during the weekend, that the solar panel project can be resumed. With the mattresses out of the dome, Bo re-organized the office space, so the dome also can accommodate a higher camp population, before he went out on the skiway to make a second test of the motion detection radar system. Again, the system easily managed to detect him crawling among the skiway flags. With both northern and southern skiway alarm zones now tested, and the system not having had false alarms for a week, tuning and testing is now completed. Another important task today, was carried out by Kevin with assistance from Tom, as our washing machine suddenly stopped working. It turned out some electronics in the door mechanism had burned out, something Kevin expertly managed to repair, a relief for us all!
The drillers made good progress today, working together with Tom on getting the sledge with the winch moved toward the drill tent, and making a ramp for the winch to get it off the sledge. Also, the white garage tent was completely freed from its foundation, by Carlos, Jonathan and the drillers, and then pulled a few meters by Tom with the Pistenbully, making this tent ready for being moved to the drilling area. Inside the drill tent berm, further preparations were made, including starting the construction of the drillers cabin. Another task that progressed today, is the making of cable ducts for camp power cables, with Sepp and various helpers working on getting power to the first of the Weatherports. In the kitchen Anders again worked magic, serving us all the most beautifully arranged and magnificently tasting open sandwiches. It is sometimes hard to believe we are in a remote field camp, when Anders is taking so good care of us!
What we did this Friday:
1. Moved sledge with winch closer to drill tent and build ramp.
2. Complete freed white garage tent from ice and snow.
3. Started moving the white garage tent with Pistenbully.
4. Started building drillers cabin.
5. Continued work on cable duct to Weatherports.
6. Moved mattresses from dome to Weatherports and reorganized dome office space.
7. Re-stocked safety boxes in carpenter’s garage.
8. Connected OneWeb/Tusass satellite internet system to camp network.
9. Made second successful test of motion detection radar system.
10. Repaired washing machine locking mechanism.
