With sunny and calm conditions here at GRIP for a third day in a row, Charlotte, Jonathan and Rahul set a new record in numbers of solar panels mounted on the dome, 7 today! The drillers also made good progress on the various excavations and installations in the drill tent (more details below). Thomas continued levelling the snow drifts around camp, this time having to move the home of Charlotte and Anders (the tomatoes) in order to get to the snow drifts below them. Sepp continued the cable trench line towards weatherports 2 and 3, with some assistance from Bo, so he can also learn how this is done. And in the cook’s freezer, we now have something in addition to food, with Carlos setting up his luminescence experiments at various depths with assistance and advice from Sepp and Julien, even doing some first measurements with help from Jonathan and Rahul in the evening. Hence, another productive day here at GRIP, again rounded off with Anders delicious dinner here in the dome.
What we did this Tuesday:
- Mounted a further 7 solar panels on the dome, 12 panels are now mounted in total.
- Secured the drill tent with snow
- Worked on power and technical installations in the big drill tent and workshop.
- Continued excavating and build railing around inclined trench in drill tent
- Identified and ordered components necessary for repair of new logger.
- Leveled surface around camp and moved tomatoes.
- Continued making power line trenches.
- Started to setup luminescence experiments, and did first measurements.
Re 2-5: Drillers’ report:
Completed anchoring and covering the snow skirt of the tent. Completed winch railing and sump. Built the handrail around the inclined trench (timber will be replaced). Continued to distribute power – now there is power in the drillers cabin and workshop and first weatherport. Began installing the ventilation/heating system in the workshop. Ordered all spares required for logger.
Weather: A sunny day, with clouds increasing in the evening. Temp. from -24C to -10C. Wind 0-5 kts, from SW all day, except in the late evening where the wind turned S and increased to 8 kts.
