June 17: “A beautiful sunny day”

The nice weather today again facilitated surface work. Hence, Sepp continued the cable duct work, as well as the work on the storage trench together with Thomas. The balloon is now in place in the storage trench, and has been covered with snow. Carlos, Charlotte, Jonathan and Rahul dug out the sledge with the polypod, and brought the polypod to camp, and Thomas gave the skiway an extra grooming session. The drillers continued investigations on the fiberglass issue in the bore hole, and built a fishing tool to try to bring at least some of the loose fiberglass to the surface (see report below). Carlos and various helpers carried out luminescence measurements at several locations in camp, working long hours to finish up most of the planned programme to investigate how exposure to various intensities of sunlight could affect deep ice core measurements to be carried out in the future. Inside the dome Kevin was finalizing the hardware fixes to the bore hole logger, and Bo was catching up on dailies, as well as coordinating upcoming flights, cargo and personnel change with the field operation manager Thomas B. and the new camp crew members that arrived in Kangerlussuaq yesterday. And then Anders again spoiled us all today with pulled pork sandwiches for lunch, spaghetti carbonara for dinner and an exquisite “GRIP surprise” (red berries, vanilla, star anise, EGRIP “legacy” mascarpone, cognac and macrons, stirred with lemon and powdered sugar) for dessert!

 

What we did this Wednesday:

  1. Groomed central part of skiway one more time.
  2. Excavated sledge with polypod
  3. Brought polypod to camp next to tomatoes.
  4. Pull test on termination, tower and winch.
  5. Two bore hole camera runs.
  6. Build fishing tool to collect fiber glass from bore hole.
  7. Continued work on storage trench.
  8. Continued work on cable duct to food Weatherport.
  9. Continued luminescence measurements.

 

Re 4-6: Drillers’ report:

Finalized the installation of the e-stops (Chantal). Terminated the drill cable in the Anti-Torque section (Grant). Performed the pull test on the termination, tower and winch (Grant, James, Julien). Built a fishing tool (or garbage collector tool) for the fiberglass plug in the hole (James). Chantal supported the luminescence measurements from Carlos. Two more borehole camera runs to verify what we are looking at (Julien) followed by a video show and discussion in the dome with all the drillers and field leader.

 

Weather: Mainly sunny, with som ground dissipating before noon and forming again in the evening. Temp. from -17C to -8C. Wind 2-11kts, mainly from NW and increasing during the day.
