The deep drilling is now closed down and the last items are in boxes ready to be shipped to Kanger. The shallow drilling at Site GRIP 2026 S1 is ongoing and close to 50 m depth a significant melt layer showed up, known as the 1889 AD melt layer that is present all over the ice sheet. For unknown reasons this summer was exceptionally warm in Greenland. The mega trench team drilled a 11 shallow core for isotopes. Otherwise, the cleaning up, packing, documentation and winter preparations continue.
As today is probably the last day for 9 of our participants, everyone was invited at 6pm to the unique GRIP Rave Cave for a drink and some moves below the turning disco ball. Quite a spectacular event that was followed by Shari’s popular pizza slices and Pia’s tasty tiramisu. Yes, we know, it’s a hard life up here.
What we did this Friday:
- Packed up drill tent and driller’s workshop
- Continued shallow drilling at GRIP 26 S1, 53.41m depth
- Drilled 11m hand auger core for Mega trench project
- Organised and documented all food in large storage trench
- Groomed skiway to prepare for tomorrows flight
- Moved battery and workshop sledges onto winter hills
- Six pm party in the Rave Cave (aka large storage trench)
Weather: During daytime wind 12-20 kt from SW to S and significant snow drift. Temp -16C to -8C. Sometimes cloudy, sometimes sunny.
