Terminating the shallow drilling program at GRIP
This weekend we worked on differentiated schedules. The ICELINK people were busy to finalize the GRIP leg of their program before leaving for other adventures on Monday, whereas most others took it easy Saturday night and Sunday morning to rest a bit before next week’s closedown of camp. We had a goodbye-party Friday and skipped part of Saturday night program. Also, our loudspeaker burned on Friday, so the camp was quiet.
Saturday, the Basler made a cargo shuttle from Kanger to pick up cargo and ice samples. The shallow drilling of the GRIP 26 S1 core was finalised Sunday evening, just in time to pack down for tomorrow’s departure. One of the drilled cores had a record length of 2.06m, and the entire logging setup needed to be modified! The gear section was giving some troubles but continued working ater some bolts were tightened. Over the weekend, we packed down two Weatherports and several small tents, the camp was groomed and we are preparing for close down.
What we did this weekend:
- Expedited Polar 6 cargo shuttle SFJ -> GRIP -> SFJ Saturday
- Finished shallow drilling GRIP 26 S1 at 80.5 m depth
- Took down WP1 + ‘food tent’ WP (3 out of 5)
- Packed shallow drilling for Mondays Basler shuttle
- Groomed skiway and camp area
- Marked mega trench position
- Collected borehole temperature data at PFAS site
- Took down small tents except for three
- Closed Carlo’s experiment pit
Weather: Saturday was a nasty cold and windy day with snowdrift: Wind 6-20 kt from SW and W, Temp -10C to -20C; Sunday was gorgeous with calm sunny weather: Wind 3-10 kt, Temp -16C to -8C.
