May 15: Summer comes too early, and with wind

We now have no problems staying warm. Relatively strong wind from WSW carries warm temperatures with it. Temperatures have risen from -27 C a few days ago to a high of -9 C today. A jump of 18 degrees. A temperature of -9 C is typical for June and July – not for May. However, although the wind is strong, we still got a lot of work done outside. The first “permanent” structure of EGRIP, the white storage garage was taken down, a first visible sign that we are packing down the entire EGRIP camp.

What we did today:

1. Took white storage tent down.
2. Cleaned two pallets with retro cargo and made them ready for pick up at the apron.
3. Removed snow drifts around fuel tanks and groomed the apron.
4. Pulled one fuel tank to generator hut and established a fuel station.
5. Cooks begin preparing food for traverse.
6. Retrieved pallet with petrol from last year from the snow. Lifted drum storage to surface.
7. Groomed skiway, taxiways and apron.

Weather today: Few scattered clouds. Temp. -17 C to -9 C. Wind: 15-22 kt from WSW. Visibility: Unrestricted. Some drifting snow.
