June 5: Packing EGRIP. Traverse at Summit, searching for GRIP borehole.

At EGRIP, we are beginning to build piles of equipment on the surface. We have to empty our garages and empty our underground storage cave. The equipment will be sorted in two piles: What goes on the first shuttle to GRIP, and what goes on the second and last shuttle to GRIP. When this operation is over, there will be nothing left of EGRIP camp, except for the borehole casing pipe standing in the snow. Also, since we are expecting guests, we build a new fresh outhouse.

As our FOM in Kangerlussuaq reports, the traverse people have been at GRIP with the radar, and they believe that they have located the drill site. Now, the search for the borehole casing can begin.

What EGRIP did today:

  1. Finished building plastic sled no.2.
  2. Groomed loading area and revised skiway markings.
  3. Building cargo line for the EGRIP move.
  4. Made tiller ready for transport out by 109th.
  5. Made new outhouse.

Weather today: Overcast thin clouds in the morning, in the evening clear. Temp. –23°C to –15°C, 4 – 9 kt from WNW, visibility unrestricted.

What traverse did today:

  1. Traverse train stayed at Summit.
  2. Traverse made an expedition to GRIP to search for borehole.
  3. Eagerly awaiting a plane from Kangerlussuaq with new generator.
